life as of late

To say that life has been busy the last three months would be an understatement.  It's been so much more than that.  And at the end of the day, the last thing I want to do is sit down and blog.  I'd much rather sip a cup of hot chocolate and go to bed - not edit pictures and type up coherent sentences to go with them.

The Mr. & Carter are on a boy scout campout tonight.  The other kiddos are all asleep.  This is the first little bit of time I've had to myself in such a long time.  It's the perfect time to jot down thoughts about the last couple of months and all of our little adventures and accomplishments.

Birthdays were celebrated for the boys in January and February.  A little piece of my heart breaks as my children get older.  Like many mothers, I wish they could stay young forever.  But I know that growing up is what we must all do.  I'm watching my boys grow into young men and I hope they hold on to their childhood as long as they possibly can.

Carter, who celebrated his 12th birthday in February, was ordained a deacon the Sunday after his birthday.  (In my church, boys receive the priesthood at age 12.)  Nana flew in from Arizona to celebrate this special day with us.  I could hardly keep the tears from flowing as Mike offered the blessing.  My heart is full.

January and February also brought a lot of snow.  The kids spent a lot of days at home.  The flu was passed from Tatum to Noah to Carter over a two week period.  We watched a lot of movies and played in the snow once the fevers were gone.   The snow was a kind reminder that I need to slow down.  I am learning that I can only do so much.  I am learning my what my limits are.

For the last year, I have been working hard to get a cub scout pack established and running in my ward (church).  Somehow, being the Cubmaster fell into my lap.   We have a small group of boys that keep me on my toes and leaders that are willing to do whatever I ask of them.   Shortly after we started up, it was Pinewood Derby time.  The Mr. & I sanded and repaired a 30 year old track that worked just enough to run a successful derby.  Just one month later, we held a circus themed Blue & Gold Banquet.    It was another successful event.  It felt so rewarding to get our scout program off to a good start.  But my mind has turned into mush.  I'm still serving as the 1st Counselor in Primary (for children ages 18 months to 11 years) and have had to keep up with those responsibilities too.  To say I've been working my butt off would be an understatement.

Feeling a bit overwhelmed, I am learning that sometimes I have to stop and take just a little time for myself.  It's tough to balance both of my callings and my home life too.  I try to keep up with chores but the piles of laundry and dishes never end.  I won't lie and say that the last few months have been easy.  They have not been.  But my heart is full and I see the blessings Heavenly Father is pouring out on my family.  We are happy.  We are healthy.  We have everything we need.  We have each other.  That makes all the hard work worth it.

Somewhere among all the hard work, we managed to sneak in a lot of family walks when the weather was warm.  We are trying to make small changes in our health habits and are working toward a healthier lifestyle.  We have learned that Noah should never ride a scooter when we go on family walks.  He rides all over the place and has had several near misses with parked cars.  He's dangerous stuff.  Oh, & the Mr. managed to plan a sweet little Valentine's dinner sans kiddos.  It was a perfect date.  I'm so in love with him.

new design

I had been wanting to do a redesign of this little blog for quite some time and was beyond happy when the amazing Elsie and Elise introduced a new online course called Blog Design Love late last year.  It's a blog design course for those who don't know how to code.  It's meant to make blog design manageable and doable.  I was completely unhappy with the first blog design that I came up with after I signed up - probably because I flew through the course material to get it out of the way so I could enjoy the holidays with my little family.  By the way, Elsie and Elise advise against this.   So after all the holiday rush and craziness was over, I revisited the course with a fresh set of eyes and came up with a completely different design.  And I love it.  Like, LOVE it.  But you must be warned that no family photos are up yet in my "About" page because it's been crazy yucky weather here to go outside and take some.  Also, my "Shop" button takes you to my etsy shop.  It is not opened yet, but will be very soon.  I am making plans and working on things bit by bit.  A big announcement will be made when it's all set to go.  I've worked hard on this design and talked my Mr.'s ears off about design worries.  He gets an A+ for helping me paste the right code into the right spot.

So what do you think?  Take a look around.  Click things.  What do you want to see more of at annie and m?  I'd love to get your input.

life according to my iPhone

It's been a busy couple of months. I haven't blogged much which means three things.

1. My big girl camera has been nice and snug in its new bag which the Mr. gifted me for Christmas. I've been too darn lazy to get it out.
2. I've been spending way more time with my kiddos. It hit me one day that I was spending more time on my iphone than I was with them. Shame on me. So lots of quality time it is - reading books, baking cookies, playing with toys, watching favorite movies, and doing yard work together. It's made a big difference to make time to spend with each of our 4 kids individually. It's easy to let life get in the way but I have to remind myself that one on one time is so fun!
3. I'm getting more done around the house. I have begun working on fun little projects to spruce up our little brick rental home since we have officially decided we will be renting for at least another year. I was hoping we could have saved enough up to buy a home but life gets in the way and things break down and need to be fixed. It's life.

The Mr. & I found a countertop for 80 bucks at Home Depot last week. Major score. Now I have an official craft space and can't wait to fill the cabinets with all of my junk so I can craft again. If I'm not posting here, I do instagram lots (where most of the pics above are found). I'm hooked. Follow me: @annieandm

my one little word for 2013

My One Little Word for 2013 is DO. This word will have significant meaning in my life this year. I have health issues I want to tackle and being idle is not an option. I have dear friends I want to keep in contact with more and that will take some extra thought and effort as I have seriously slacked in this department in the past. I want to dig deeper into my religion. I want to read and know scripture like I never have before. I want to be a better mother, wife, person. All of this will take more doing. I look forward to the adventures this One Little Word will take me on. I look forward to becoming a better me.

What about you?  Do you have One Little Word this year?  Share in the comments below!

hello november

Hello November,
I am so glad you are here.  I've been counting down the months and making wishes that you'd come quickly.  And now here you are.  Could I be extra excited in a school girl kind of way that my birthday just happens to be eight days away?  Maybe.  I have big plans for you this month.  There is so much to do and so little time.  Please last as long as you can.
Love,

hello Sandy, goodbye power

Hello friends.  Just popping in to say hello.  And goodbye.  But just for a few days.  We are hunkered down in our little brick rental home, listening to the pouring rain of Sandy begin to beat on our roof.  The Mr.'s work is cancelled until further notice and the kids are home from school.  As of right now, we still have power but that is almost guaranteed to change.  Sandy is getting stronger and we are still in the "Action" zone.  But  I am happy to report that we are ready.  Well at least I think we are ready.  We've never been in a hurricane before, so this will be an adventure.  I'm trying to think of it as our grand welcome to the East coast ;)  Our 72 hour kits are ready, we have plenty of batteries, water and non-perishable food thanks to Sam's Club.  And we have plenty of board games and Legos to keep us occupied.

It will be quiet on this ol' blog till things settle down.  My thoughts and prayers are with those who will be affected by this big mama of a storm.  Stay safe.

life according to instagram

Life has been busy in the Buis household as of late. The kids started school the day after Labor Day. We celebrated with homemade cinnamon rolls.  It reminded me of how much I love to bake.  Somehow, that love got put on a shelf a couple of years ago and I haven't done much with it.  Now that all of the kids are in school, I plan to make some of the treats I've been dreaming up in my head.  I'll share, of course ;)

In other news, I am healing from my surgery well.  I have another whole week before I can even leave the house and two weeks before I can drive again.  During my down time, I am watching netflix with the Mr. (today is was Rocky 3 - his choice, not mine), nap, do minimal house cleaning.   I am sprucing up this little blog here & there too.

What have you been up to?

I am working on some new curtains (that I started before my surgery) and hope they'll be done next week.  I'm a slow worker ;)

I am a regular reader of Sandi's blog & was excited to see her post over the weekend for Sarah's 6 weeks to a better blog series.  I just finished reading the first post in the series and look forward to giving some thought to the homework assignment over the course of the day.  Six words shouldn't be hard to come up with, right??

Will you join in?

Happy Monday,
